Sharpe Bros. Recycles Asphalt Shingles In Greensboro Area
(1st/2nd Quarter 2014)
Already active in the green movement as a recycler of asphalt pavement, Sharpe Bros. in Greensboro, NC, also recycles asphalt shingles.
The practical concept of using Recycled Asphalt Shingles (RAS) in asphalt mixes was introduced to the Greensboro area several years ago. Sharpe Bros. initially purchased the material from a third-party, then leased a recycling operation, before eventually bringing the entire operation in-house as a value-added offering. The cost-savings is similar to Recycled Asphalt Product (RAP) and can be used in conjunction with RAP to produce RAP/RAS mixes.
Recycling shingles not only lowers costs, it also reduces the amount of waste going to area landfills. Having its own asphalt shingle recycling operation in-house ensures a consistent supply of the material.
The shingle pile and recycling equipment is located at Sharpe’s Plant 1 location at 6311 Burnt Poplar Rd. (top photo). Running the operation is Shingle Recycling Manager Nick Mulls (below).
